Lost ember2/18/2023 ![]() The draw to the game, for me, was the idea that you can play as any animal that you encounter in the game’s world. Lost Ember is explicitly billed as an “animal exploration adventure game.” You start the game as a wolf that’s benignly possessed by a human spirit trying to make her way into the afterlife. The first is Mooneye Studios’ Lost Ember the second is Might and Delight’s Shelter. Both of these games have playing “as an animal” built right into them. Let me offer a couple of examples that will put some more meat on the bones of this idea. If I’m able to ask myself what it’s like to be Castlevania’s Simon Belmont, I should also be able to ask myself what it’s like to be a vampire bat. This is where I think gamers are uniquely situated to have interesting answers, because we are playing around with empathy all the time. The way I, as a potential predator, answer the question, “What is it like to be a pig?”, has pretty important ramifications, especially for the pig. The way I look at “add bacon for fifty cents” has a lot to do with whether I believe pigs are flesh machines that turn slop into shit or meaningfully sentient beings with the emotional range of a human toddler. ![]() And this is why games that make you play as an animal are so interesting.īecause, for a lot of people, the question of our relationship to animals is determined by empathy. It’s the difference between me playing Spider Solitaire by myself and me embodying an RPG character who has to complete a game of Spider Solitaire, before the evil digimancer locks me forever in the Netscape Dimension. I don’t get to ask, “Well, is Link the kind of character who would really want to kill Ganondorf?” Pretending is empathetic. He rated it 4/10 stars and wrote that the game "fails to deliver on nearly every front".But when I’m playing-engaging with the mechanics of the game-I’m not always necessarily doing it with the character in mind. Brett Posner-Ferdman, who reviewed the Nintendo Switch version for Nintendo Life, also criticized the game's performance. Although he said Lost Ember becomes more enjoyable later on, Bailes compared it negatively to Journey and said that Lost Ember "takes way too long to get flowing properly". ![]() He wrote, " Lost Ember 's animal body possession provides some fun moments but the lack of anything substantive to do with it makes for a beautiful but surprisingly empty experience." Reviewing the PlayStation 4 version, Jon Bailes of Polygon criticized the game's performance. Richard Hoover reviewed the game for Adventure Gamers and rated it 3/5 stars. Luke Kemp of PC Gamer rated the game 90/100 and called it "a wonderful, unique, and unforgettable experience with a love for nature". It was ported to Nintendo Switch in September 2020. It was released in late 2019 for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Mooneye Studios successfully crowdfunded Lost Ember in 2016. ![]() Unlocking these memories allows them to progress through the game and enter the afterlife. By exploring nearby ruins, the player and spirit learn more about their past lives and the civilization they came from. Possessing a bird allows players to fly over terrain inaccessible to the wolf, and fish can swim across lakes. To continue, players can possess other animals they encounter. The game does not have traditional puzzles, though players may encounter impassable terrain. ![]() The player and the spirit set off to find out why the player is barred from the afterlife and to assist the spirit. A spirit asks the player for help in reaching the afterlife and explains that people disqualified from entering the afterlife are reincarnated as animals. Lost Ember is a third-person adventure game. ![]()
